The Beauty of your Imperfections
Why are we so hard on ourselves?
I was looking at myself the other day, really looking and, as we all do sometimes, I noticed the things I didn't like.
The wrinkles. The bits that have changed with age. The things that don't quite look the way they used to.
And it made me laugh a little, because I thought:
When did I become so critical of myself?
I've spent so much of my life trying to improve myself. Trying to be healthier. Fitter. More successful. More confident. Trying to get things “right”.
And then I thought...
What if I don't need to fix myself?
What if I could simply accept myself?
Not because I don't want to grow or change, I absolutely do, but because maybe I can do those things without constantly telling myself that I'm not good enough.
We are all a little bit imperfect
Life doesn't leave us untouched.
We get scars.
We get wrinkles.
We make mistakes.
We have our hearts broken.
We lose people.
We make decisions we regret.
We say things we wish we hadn't said.
Sometimes we completely mess things up.
And sometimes, despite our best efforts, life simply doesn't go according to plan.
But that's not failure.
That's called being human.
And I actually think there is something incredibly beautiful about someone who has lived a life.
You can see it in their face.
You can hear it in the way they talk.
You can feel it in their compassion.
Their experiences have shaped them.
Their imperfections have become part of their story.
Why do we give everyone else more grace?
Think about someone you really love, your best friend, your partner...
Do you love them because they're perfect?
Of course not.
You love their funny little habits. Their quirks. The things they say. The stories they've collected along the way.
You love the person they've become because of everything they've experienced.
So why do we struggle to give ourselves that same kindness?
Why are we so much harder on ourselves than we would ever be on someone we love?
Perhaps it's time to change that.
Instead of asking:
“What do I need to fix about myself?”
perhaps we could ask:
“What could I learn to love about myself?”
That doesn't mean giving up on ourselves.
It doesn't mean we stop growing.
It simply means we stop making growth a punishment.
We can say:
“I'm already enough and I still want to see what's possible for me.”
I love that thought, don't you?
Because there is a world of difference between trying to change because you hate who you are... and changing because you love yourself enough to want more for your life.
So, My Friends, your challenge this week...
I'd love you to try something.
Think of one thing about yourself that you've always considered an imperfection.
It could be something physical.
Something about your personality.
A mistake you've made.
Something that's happened to you.
Something about getting older.
Something you wish you could change.
And instead of criticising it this week, get curious about it.
Ask yourself:
What has this taught me?
What has it given me?
Has it made me stronger?
Has it made me more compassionate?
Has it helped me understand other people?
You might be surprised by your answers.
Because sometimes the things we think have broken us...
are actually the things that have shaped us.
And perhaps that's the beauty of our imperfections.
We don't have to have the perfect body, home, career, family or life.
We just have to be ourselves.
Beautifully.
Wonderfully.
Imperfectly ourselves.
And maybe that's one of the gifts of getting older, not becoming a different person, but becoming more comfortable with the person we've always been.
So this week, be a little kinder to yourself.
Stop trying to hide the bits that make you human.
Your imperfections aren't necessarily something to be ashamed of.
They might just be some of the most interesting things about you.
And remember:
You don't need to be perfect to be beautiful.
You just need to be you.
Love,
Sally Bee x x
